The cool kids over at French fashion spot Colette comissioned Jamie Smith, the beatmaker and bass-rumbler from the xx, to whip up a little cake mix for them. Not only have the XX sold over 100,000 copies of their debut album but they also have under their belt the popular XX remix of Florence and The Machine- You’ve Got the Love which was produced solely by Jamie and he has also remixed the entire Gil Scott-Heron LP, I’m New Here so he is definately taking flight at the minute.

The Colette mix dropped online last month and you can stream it below. It clearly hasn’t just been thrown together though, there is a real progression to the sound of the mix. You can tell that Jamie is a genuine beatsmith mastering his craft and you can hear his distinct style as the mix rolls seamlessly through garage, dubstep and anything with a beat that’ll rattle a bass bin. The intro echoes shades of our very own DJ TP’s Future Garage mix, with Mike Skinner weaving his rhymes together but my favourite part of the mix kicks in about 20.54 in, which features a filthy beat named in the tracklist as Silentone : DUB PLATE 1 but is in fact a Jamie xx produced beat he has also used on the remix of Gil Scott-Heron – New York is Killing Me, listen here. I can’t say I know much about these guys, apart from the fact that I stumbled across them by accident, and oh man, am I glad I did.

A variety of influences spring to mind when I listen to their sound, El -B? Kode 9 & SpaceApe? Massive Attack? Burial? Jeeez who am I to say, all I do know is, I’m really feeling what their bringing to the table and the track ‘Bronze’ has got me transfixed.

Joy Orbison is one of the hottest and freshest producers building steam on the underground as we speak. Already getting massive support from dubstep’s finest as well as other crossover DJ’s such as Gilles Peterson, this guy is getting ready to blow. I only discovered his sound a few months ago, but as soon as I heard ‘Hyph Mngo’ (above) on his myspace player, I was hooked. This track literally oozes freshness and sounds like UK Garage waking up from a 7 year siesta, fresh faced and ready to kick ass. The track is due to drop officially on Hotflush Recordings in September.
